In 2016, writer Steven Thrasher camped with our Burning Man camp, Que Viva! Camp. It was the year that I travelled back to Black Rock City to take the ashes of my beloved wife, Laura Diamond, to the temple to be burned in it’s fire on Sunday night.
Steven was so moved by this and the entire experience that he wrote this piece which was published in The Guardian.
Dust to dust: mourning the dead at Burning Man

“One of the biggest parties on earth isn’t just about having a good

time. Many come to Burning Man to grieve – and inter the ashes of loved ones.”
Steven was one the people who came to visit me when I was recovering from the broken leg I suffered in the motorcycle accident that took Laura’s life. Although he was flying around the country as a writer-at-large for Guardian US. , he took time to come see me. He was inspired by Diamond Cutter’s (Laura’s name at Burning Man) commitment to equality; racial, economic and gender.
Steven has since moved on from The Guardian and is now a Henry M. MacCracken Doctoral Fellow in American Studies at New York University
Thanks, Steven. Keep burning bright!
