You’ll have to excuse me. My mind is kind of blown right now.
You might have read my earlier post about my travel here in Thailand, about staying put and not staying put. I thought that I had it all figured out, but no, the universe was just setting me up.
To recap: One on hand, I love Phuket so much that I wanted to have a larger place here, maybe with a view (my current place has spoiled me), maybe somewhere that had a place for visitors to stay.
On the other hand, I also wanted to stick to my plan of staying in my current apartment to keep my expenses low, and use Phuket as a base of operations for travel. Of these two “wants”, I had decided that staying here was the way to go.
Earlier this week, Bubba and I were out in Phuket Town one night and we ran into a French woman, Emily, (who is awesome, by the way. She’s the one who took my current FB profile picture). The three of us ended up hanging out at my place, just sitting on the balcony talking. As we looked out across Sam Kong at night, I said to Bubba, “I wonder what that arc of lights is on that far hill? I always end up looking at them at night because they stand out on that dark hill.” Those lights on the hill have intrigued me since I moved here.
Bubba had also been thinking of moving out of his single apartment. The next day, he told me that he found a place, actually two places near to where I live now and he wanted me to go with him and check it out. So, we go over there and…the apartments are at the top of the arc of lights!
Of the two available places in this triplex, the larger and higher up apartment is just a little more than I pay now. It’s still a single, but larger than my current place. Even though it’s a single, there is a small, built-in extra bed where visiting guests can sleep.
The main bed is soft, which is a big deal because most Asian beds I have found to be hard as hell.
It has a bathtub! With a window! You can take a bath while watching the sun rise (or watch someone else taking a bath!)
The balcony is large and has a table and chairs. And the view…you can see all of Sam Kong, Phuket Town in the distance, the bay, the islands of Koh Yao Yai and Coconut Island, all facing East and the rising sun! Enlarge
There is even a great view of the place where I am typing this right now!
All this for $285 a month.
It wasn’t until a few days later that the gravity of what happened struck me. There were two things that I wanted; travel/save money and an upgraded place to live. But as soon as I stopped having resistance to staying in the place I was in, in doing nothing, I was presented with something even better which met both of my wants. And, incredibly, I had been looking at it every day that I’ve been in Phuket. The universe really knows how to write a punchline.
I’ve known people who name the place they live, like Casa de Hippiechick, but I have never lived in a place that called out for one. However, today, I paid the deposit and signed the papers and on Sunday, I will move into “The Arc of Light”.
